Who does what in the web realm
Below is an overview of the main roles you may come across.
Web Designer – typically this refers to the designer responsible for the ‘front-end’ (viewable to the public) space on the website. Web Designers individual skill set can vary however most are familiar with standard graphic design programs and have capacity to ‘front-end’ code in HTML, DHTML, CSS, JavaScript as well as develop in multimedia programs such as Flash.
Web Developer – their role refers to the ‘back-end’ development of the website. Programming includes; client side scripting, server side scripting, managing data with SQL, customized e-commerce solutions, database driven development, online surveys and online quoting. Customised programming can be in a multitude of languages – such as PHP, ASP, Javascript, HTML, DHTML, SHTML, Cold Fusion (CFM) and ActionScript. Development is dependant on the individual IT requirements of a client.
Information Architect – responsible for how a site should be structured, what kind of content should be presented and how to accommodate a sites future growth.
Focus generally should be on the ‘end- user’ tasks and experience of reaching the relevant information via the quickest and most direct route
Content Writer/Copywriter – delivery of your message needs to be clear, generally short and bulleted. The aim is to engage your audience within the first few seconds and drive them via the most direct route to the information they seek.
Hosting Provider - provides storage space for your website and email management. In most cases they can also co-ordinate the purchase and management of your domain name.
Domain Name Registrar - responsible for registering your chosen domain name (e.g. www.yourbusiness.com.au). You can use an external provider separate to your hosting provider - but my recommendation is that you bundle everything together.
Internet Service Provider (ISP) – provide the means to access (dial-up or broadband connection) to the internet.
